It took me a while to really get into Matched. It seemed really slow at first, but after a few chapters I was definitely hooked. If you've heard that this book is a page-turner, it is absolutely true! It was beautifully constructed and the concept of not being able to choose your own path is awesome.
Cassia Reyes was just Matched with her best friend Xander. One night she is reading Xander's microcard background information and instead of seeing his picture on the screen she sees the face of another handsome boy named Ky. From that point on Cassia's not sure if, or why, she should trust the Society's choices for every individual and if she wants a future with Xander.
Cassia and Xander are childhood friends who have grown up together. Xander is a confident kind of guy who really cares for Cassia and is comfortable with the idea of being her Match. Ky is something different. Cassia knows Ky doesn't put forth his best efforts. Ky just wants to fit in and not stick out in a crowd. Ky is open and sweet and different than anyone Cassia has come to know. You can feel the emotional pull grow between Cassia and Ky as the story - their story - progresses and its fascinating to learn more about what love means for people who have been forbidden from making this connection to someone other than their Match.
Reading Matched made me think about what it would be like to not be able to make my own choices. I loved being able to reflect the story to real life and how society would be today if it was like this dystopian novel. That's how you know its a great book, when after you read it it sticks in your mind and stays with you.
The ending was by far the best part of the entire book. I can't wait for Crossed, the second book of the series. I can't imagine what will happen next and I love the anticipation of it all. I really recommend Matched to everyone, it is such a great read!
